At Glenwood Avenue Elementary School, where I teach, we have Smartboards in every classroom and the teachers have access to Senteos when they decide to use them.

For my webquest on the near extinction of the Osprey, I think that using the Senteo to assess the background knowledge of students about the various aspects of the webquest content and process would be helpful to both me and the students.

The objective for my use of the Senteos would be to find out if the students know anything about the Osprey, its habitat, history, behavior, etc. and to assess their knowledge of relevant vocabulary such as: migration, pesticide, environment, conservation, habitat.

I would create a set of questions for the smartboard and assess students responses around these topics and use the responses as a springboard for discussion and background building prior to beginning the project.

An example would be to create a multiple choice questions such as: What is an Osprey? mammal, bird, reptile, fish
When a bird migrates it: builds a nest, moves to a new location, hunts, lays an egg
Conservation means to: save something valuable for all people, a place where American Indians live, a way to make sure you can eat at a restaurant

Through these questions, I would be able to determine if the students had some exposure to the vocabulary and content, a substantial amount, or little or none. For my English Language Learners, this type of content vocabulary often must be be explicitly taught.

While discussing the answers to these questions, I could also use Inspirations on the Smartboard to create a concept map to use as an advance organizer for the project.
